Tamar is a very talentuous textile-designer living in Pune and she has started by weaving. Tamar, you should go to Kanchipuram!!!!!

Oui, Kanchipuram est réputée pour ses saris de soie très précieux, particulièrement ses saris de mariage que les familles viennent acheter de très loin. Je rêvais d'aller visiter des ateliers, c'est chose faite! Je vous y emmène, mais suivez moi bien, parce qu'il faut trouver son chemin dans un dédale de ruelles...
Yes, Kanchipuram is well-know for the silk-sarees, specially for the wedding sarees which the families buy from all over India. It was a dream for me to visit such little workshops and I'm very happy to have done it. Come with me, I'll show you these marvels, but follow me carefully because it's a mess of mews....

Dans un premier atelier, on nous explique qu'il y a 5500 fils de chaines pour un sari (1m10 de large), chaque fil étant accroché à un fil vertical qui lui permet d'être soulevé, ou pas, selon là où on en est dans le motif. Chaque fil vertical est lesté par une sorte d'épingle en plomb.
In this first workshop, one explains us that there are 5500 warp yarns for a saree (44 inches width) and each of them is linked to a vertical thread. Therefore, it is lifted or not, depends of the progress of the pattern. Every vertical thread is weighted. And please, don't laugh about my english, it is veryyyyyyyyyy difficult for me!!!

Dans cet atelier, il s'agit d'un métier semi-automatique, avec des cartes perforées, mais regardez bien, surtout dans le film en dessous, vous verrez que c'est quand même super artisanal et de bric et de broc!!!!
Here, this is a semi-automatical jacquard weaving loom, with punch cards, but you will see in the movie at the end of the article how all is a mishmash ...

Les fils de soie sont vraiment, vraiment fins! Les fils d'or sont composés de 7 % d'or, de 20% d'argent et le reste de soie.
The silk threads are really very very thin, it's incredible! The golden threads are made of 7% of pure gold, and silver and silk, very precious!

They need 15 days to make a saree, working 12 hours per day. Ils tissent un sari en deux semaines et pas à 39 heures par semaine!

Ils installent leurs métiers dans la pièce principale de leur maison; ils apprennent l'ouvrage de leur père, lui même l'ayant appris de son père, grand père etc... tisserand de père en fils .... et comme ils vivent tous dans la même maison, on utilise le métier de son arrière arrière arrière arrière arrière grand père......
The looms are in the main room of the house. They have learned their job from their father, who had learned himself by the grand-father .... and the beauty of the work runs in the family ..... As they all live in the same house, the weaver uses the loom of his grand grand grand grand grand father...

In that room, there are 2 looms.....

Un rouet, symbole de l'Inde, des plus rudimentaires.... on s'en sert encore!
A spinning wheel, indian symbol, very very simple.... but still used!

Dans ce troisième atelier, le métier n'est plus du tout automatique. Le monsieur a une série de cordes sur lesquelles il tire dans un certain ordre, chacune faisant mettre au repos les fils de chaine qu'il faut pour laisser apparaitre le motif... c'est étourdissant d'ingéniosité! Et je n'ai pas compris comment il s'y retrouve!
In that third workshop, the loom is absolutely not automatic. The weaver uses a lot of cords, he pulls on them in a certain order to lift the warp yarns as it should be for the pattern.... it is amazing ! I didn't understand how he can find the good cord amongst all....

Un métier qui a peut être plusieurs centaines d'années et le résultat est époustouflant..... pas d'ordi, pas de cartes perforées.... juste le cerveau humain et de la débrouille....
On a weaving loom which is maybe several centuries old, and the result is mind-blowing! Without computer, without punch cards... just human brain and resourcefulness.....
